Executive Director, Morgan Stanley
He/Him · New York, New York, United States

William Steinberg has always been drawn to environments that reward curiosity, discipline, and careful thinking. Raised in a Marine Corps family with a father who served nearly 35 years as a pilot, he grew up constantly relocating and adapting to new surroundings. Those early experiences shaped his resilience and sparked a fascination with systems, mechanics, and problem-solving. Alongside academics, he developed a lifelong appreciation for music and athletics, learning guitar and competing on his high school basketball team. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University. He completed a six-month internship at NASA Langley Research Center, contributing to the HALOE project, which was used on space shuttle missions to collect solar data. He later completed a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at California State University, Northridge, where his academic excellence earned him membership in Tau Beta Pi. By graduation, he had gained deep hands-on experience with embedded systems and signal processing. William began his engineering career in California at McDonnell Douglas, where he worked on development programs for the MD-80, MD-11, and C-17 aircraft. His work focused on embedded firmware, operating systems, and airborne data-acquisition tools that required precision, testing, and low-level debugging. He later joined Sonatech in Santa Barbara, where he designed embedded software and controllers for underwater acoustic tracking systems used in military and commercial environments, further refining his ability to deliver reliable, high-performance systems. In 1994, William relocated to New York City to join Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Technology Division, marking a pivotal transition into financial engineering. Over the following decades, he built and led teams that developed trading infrastructure, real-time data platforms, and global risk and booking systems. In 2008, he joined Goldman Sachs, where, as Vice President, William Steinberg supported equities market-making and quantitative trading, delivering solutions across futures, ETFs, risk management, and exchange connectivity. William returned to Morgan Stanley in 2023 as an Executive Director within Institutional Securities Technology, leading global C++ teams responsible for trading risk controls. Across more than 30 years in finance, he has built expertise in C++, Python, and distributed systems while remaining active in charitable and mentorship efforts. Outside work, he continues to enjoy music, sports, travel, and outdoor pursuits, guided by a career defined by consistency, technical depth, and purpose.
