Dr. David Burkett has an extensive medical career centered around cardiology, focusing on general cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology (E.P.), echocardiography, and non-invasive cardiology. His professional expertise spans the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias, hyperlipidemia, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and pulmonary hypertension. He practices a preventive and comprehensive approach to patient care, focusing on tailored treatment plans. He currently practices at Cardiology Cardiovascular Associates of San Antonio in Texas and holds board certifications from the Texas Medical Board and the A.B.I.M. Cardiovascular Disease Boards. He began his medical career in his father's practice, Burkett Cardiovascular Associates in Monroe, Louisiana. After his father retired, he founded Burkett Heart Clinic, growing the practice to serve around 3,500 patients from Louisiana and neighboring states. He has also collaborated with several regional medical centers, including North Monroe H.C.A. Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. After several years in private practice, he expanded his professional scope by transitioning to academia. He embraced roles as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Cardiology at the L.S.U. School of Medicine's Cardiac/E.P. Catheterization Lab. This phase of his career was marked by a commitment to teaching and advancing the practice of cardiology, particularly enjoying the mentorship of residents and cardiology fellows. Educationally, he obtained a B.S. in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from Southern Methodist University (S.M.U.) in Dallas. He pursued his medical training at LSU HSC School of Medicine in New Orleans, completing his internship, residency, and cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He further specialized with a Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. During his advanced training, he also gained experience working in emergency rooms, broadening his clinical skills. He has contributed significantly to cardiological research, focusing on innovative treatments for atrial fibrillation and other cardiac conditions. His research has led to the development of new ablation techniques, and he has been involved in numerous clinical studies that have shaped current practices in cardiology. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with various awards and honors, reflecting his commitment to excellence in clinical practice and medical education. He is an active member of the American Medical Association and the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. On a personal level, he is a devoted father of five, actively supporting his children's educational and personal development.
